Principal Banner Ads

For several years I worked on banner ads for Principal. They ranged from simple JPGSs, animated GIFs, flash animations to full page takeovers. This is a short sample of a wide range of these ads. Of course in the wild these ads were Flash animated at 14 frames per second and each one was formatted to fit several standard banner sizes.

Gordmans Rewards

These are print pieces done for one of Gordmans rewards campaign. Provided with images and text this was a look exercise with different sizes so they could see how the design would translate from posters to post cards and even an email campaign.

Gabes Trunk Sale

My first broadcast spot, it was created for Gabes a discount fashion retailer. We were provided with a storyboard and a short deadline so I had some help on the faces and the flicker effect.

Screenscape Holiday E-Card

As part of it’s marketing campaign, Screenscape Studios sent out this holiday e-card. An invitation was sent via email inviting the recipients to follow a link to this custom video player with a holiday message. The E-card is a combination of javascript driven images for the opening and closing with a video as it’s message center piece.

Defend The N Game

This game was created for SFP/Verdesian to promote their NutriSphere-N product. Their product protects Nitrogen in the soil so that field crops have an abundance of it for the season. The game opens with a quiz to assess the player’s knowledge as well as educate them about Nitrogen. For each question answered correctly the player earns an extra life for the defending stage. Dropping into the game stage, the player controls the NutriSphere-N to protect the Nitrogen entering the soil while taking out the things that attack it. Once a player has touched the Nitrogens they move to the plant helping it to grow which improves your score and reinforces SFPs message. There were versions of this game for their website, a trade show booth, and a mobile app.

Combine Combat

An early flash game that I worked on was a packman-style one called Fusion Frenzy. Created for Hoover it featured a vacuum as its hero with dust bunnies as the ghosts. I scripted the game while a co-worker worked on the screen design, and it was a huge hit for them.

Successful Farming Online wanted a unique way to help their advertising client, John Deere, promote new features on their latest combine. They saw Fusion Frenzy and ordered a game similar to it with a hero combine and a pesky neighbor to compete with. When this game was live it was the most heavily trafficked page on their site.

In the life of this game, there were two online versions, a trade show kiosk version, and a hay bailer spinoff in both online and trade show versions. I scripted all of them as well as completed the interface work on the later versions.

Here’s a look at the Hay Tool Hayday as well as their older sibling, Hoover Fusion Frenzy.

Iowa Clinic Minisites

The Iowa Clinic had a large database-driven site, but some of the departments wanted a more specialized presence on the web. The minisites were created to fill that need. Built initially as a static site I worked with a programmer to create templates with portions of content fed from the main IC site helping to keep information consistent and production costs down. The design of the sites reflected the printed materials for each department to help give them a cohesive look.

Berard & Fazio Logo

This logo was created for a garden supply company that provided pots, soil, plants and other item to big box stores for their summer gardening section.

Synergy Jazz

This was a website created for the non-profit Synergy Jazz, a group that was formed to promote educational and performance projects centered around Jazz. This site was a static brochure-ware site.

Risk Raiders Game

The Risk Raiders game was created as a fun way to test lending agents’ knowledge about lending practices. Each month they logged in and answered questions to gain pucks for a Plinko game that followed. Points earned in the Plinko game were used to award prizes, and there was a cumulative total for an overall winner. The game tracked quiz results to help the company tailor their next month’s training sessions to cover topics that scored low. By making a game of the process the company found participation to be higher than traditional surveys.

Brownells Zombie Elimination Crew

Brownells Zombie Elimination Crew (ZEC) was a tongue-in-cheek take on the whole Zombie phenomenon. The story was centered around a crew that was surviving a zombie apocalypse. Created for Halloween the ZEC microsite was a very interactive way to explore the crew, shop off the characters, watch their trailer, and even get a behind-the-scenes look at what went into creating all the assets. The project had a compressed timeline and was both challenging and fun to work on. It was also a huge success for Brownells.

The Skidsteer Showdown Game

Vermeer wanted an online game that mimicked an activity at their trade show. The game is to move a pile of rocks from one point, down the field of obstacles to a drop-off point and race back to the starting point all while racing the clock. In-person, this showed off the maneuverability of their tracked hauler. Online, it turned into an inter-office rivalry.

Country Estates Logo

Country Estates had a dated text logo so when it came time to create new yard signs they took the chance to revise their look. The bold black sign stands out when placed in front yards.

Steer Your Deere

Following the success of the Combine Combat games, Successful Farming ordered another game in cooperation with John Deere. Steer Your Deere is a driving game where you have to dodge obstacles on a pre-defined course.

In our first meeting, they asked if it was possible to make the tractor hard to steer if the player did not pick up the Activecommand Steering power-up. So it’s pretty hard going until you pick it up!

Here is a look at the progress made from first proof of concept to final deliverable.
